The ChallengeThe National 3 Peaks 24 Hour Challenge is one of the ultimate challenges in the UK. This is our own privately organised challenge attempt, and the route we have chosen involves 9,700 feet of ascent and descent, 22 miles walking and 470 miles of driving. To complete this within 24 hours we must climb each mountain in much less time than the normal walking time. For example the normal walking time for Ben Nevis (up and down) is 6 hours plus, and considerably more including stops, but we will be aiming to complete it within 5 hours. The extra speed required for the 24 hour challenge, the lack of sleep, and the discomfort during the challenge will take its toll. We will need to pace ourselves carefully, as exhaustion doesn't mix well with wind chill on a mountain. The walking distance of 22 miles is not the real problem - the problem is the 9,700 feet of steep, rough ascent and descent, and the punishing effect on the legs, knees and ankles. Our objective is for all members of the team to reach all three summits - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - within 24 hours. However if any team members have knee problems, or are unable to maintain the necessary speed then, as with many mountaineering expeditions, they will act as support members of the team to assist a smaller "summit party". Of course there is no guarantee of success, with the possibility of bad weather, bad traffic or bad luck. We are therefore asking for sponsorship of our attempt - with no strings attached! We promise to give it our best shot, and before the day we will be putting a lot of time and effort into improving our fitness, as well as into fundraising efforts.
